March 2023, learners from Luhlaza High School KHAYELITSHA graduating from our program: Ndakha inkamva lam eliqaqambileyo – isiXhosa, Ek skep my beste toekoms – Afrikaans, I create my best future – English
From early 2021 to July 2023 with funding from CARA – NDA, Great Beginnings Africa delivered an intervention to primary and high school learners, to reduce/prevent GBVF. Despite the challenges of COVID and load-shedding (lack of electricity), collaboration with Facilitators and School Principals resulted in:
- 319 Workshops were delivered to mixed groups of learners
- 1077 learners attended all 6 workshops and graduated from the program “I create my best future”
- 7559 learners attended (3504 boys and 3992 girls)
- Learners scored the program 84%
- 95% of learners indicated their peers would like to participate in the program
- 72% of learners indicated that the program had influenced their opinions on teenage pregnancy with likely behavioural change
- Testimonials from 2 school principals applauding and recommending the program for other learners, both primary and secondary.
These learners go out and influence their peers and in turn impact their families and communities.
What was most interesting was that even boys enjoyed learning about caring for an infant, watching the dad “Sipho” role-modelling a father participating in child care and household chores, and hearing the stories of the young females who had experienced unplanned teenage pregnancy.
